all alone

"Where are you?" A chill came over Kate as she searched the house. No one was there. Not even Ellie. "Ellie!" She thought she'd just heard her. Had she gone out the back door? Kate went throught the kitchen then and found herself in the back yard. Alone. It was so quiet. She wondered when the last person had been here. It was a quaint enough in a run down sort of way. But still. It felt weird.

"Ellie!" She ran around the side of the house back to the little front yard. No one. Nobody. Just Kate by herself. She nursed her upper lip. What could have happened? Was there a basement? She didn't so. What if the house swallowed her sister up, and she was somewhere underground. Lost. She was going to have a baby for gods sakes!

Kate started to tremble the more she thought of it. Really. Her sister was not here. She'd gone in. And now she wasn't here. Kate looked around her, hugging herself. What was happening? Was she even where she was suppose to be? No one seemed to be home. It was getting darker. She went inside then and looked around wondering what to do.

Finally, she sat down on the couch, thinking she should do something, but what. She was tired and hungry, yet frantic. Her sister could be having her baby right now. Her face tensed just thinking about it.

When her cell rang, she jumped. Back to reality she guessed. Maybe it was sister, but it wasn't. Just her Mom.

"Is Ellie all right?"

"I-I think so?" She hated to alarm her mother just yet. What if it was nothing? But what if it was something? Kate caught her breath. She couldn't help but shiver a moment. "She just went to the store." Kate couldn't think of a better thing to tell her. Obviously, there was something strange going on, and yet, here she was sitting, waiting in the quiet, wondering what came next.
