Ellie kept staring at Kale while the nurse went to make the changes on Kale's paperwork. It was so bright in the room, Ellie was sure this couldn't be happening. Soon she'd be somewhere else, maybe another world. Someone telling her that she couldn't do this. Be here for Kale.

"What are you doing?" Evan had found her, and he was pulling her from Kale, prying her fingers from him. "You shouldn't be here." He looked around as if they couldn't be seen here. They needed to leave.

"What?" She winced as he grabbed her by the waist.

"You don't know him!"

"Yes, I do! I do Evan! I know who he is!" Evan didn't give her time for an answer. He put his hand over her mouth and went out the quickest exit.

They were midway in the back parking lot before she bit him.

"Damn!" He said but didn't let go. "We're getting the hell out of here, right now If I'd only known what this was really about. Why didn't you tell me!"

"Tell you what!" She was trying to scream. She was kicking, but he wasn't letting go as he finally found his car out front.

"There could be someone around watching," he told her after he'd stuff her in the car and locked the doors. "Lets just go to California."

"But I don't want to go to California," Ellie told. "I want to be right here. I can find a job in the hospital. I'll stay there til Kale wakes up. I don't want to be here with you!" She punched her fist into the dashboard, thinking she should really be hitting him.

"Ellie, it doesn't work that way. It doesn't. Its just you and me. Not him. You don't want to know him. You have to believe me."

"Why should I believe you?" He was leaving the car lot now. But not too fast. He didn't want the cops to notice, but fast enough to keep Ellie from flying out the door.

"Because you have too." He looked over at her. "Why were you with him? He's the enemy. Don't you get it?"

"No, I don't," Ellie looked back at the hospital. It felt like a fading memory. She just couldn't forget.

"They sent him to kill you, Ellie." He kept his eyes on the road and kept drving a bit more than the speed limit.

"Me? What about you? What are you talking about?"

"I can't do this right now, you just have to trust me," Evan told her as he headed down the interstate. They were going to California even if it were hours away.
