love don't live here anymore

Ellie was sure she heard someone say out there, "You get a second chance..." but she wasn't sure if she heard correctly. She kept asking but her eyes shut automatically. And it felt as if she was on air as she floated away from where she'd been in the white room. She was going some place dark. She just knew it.

There was so much she wanted to get back to with Kale. Experiments to start. Places to explore. She had a sad feeling she'd never know about the place she'd been. Had it been a dream? Was this a dream? What in the hell was going on?

Suddenly, she felt as if she was in a vacuum and it sucked her somewhere...somewhere she'd been before.

Ellie could hardly make it out in the darkness. She was in bed. At least. She took a deep breath. This was real. Wasn't it? It was a memory. Perhaps.

Ellie rose up on her elbows trying to make out where she was and who was with her. She got up in the same dress she'd been in all along. No undies. She could never seem to keep up with them. She reached for the lamp next to the bed before she even knew what she was doing.

There was Evan. His back bare and turned away from her. She just stared for a moment. Then went to the mirror to look through it like a window, searching for Kale. Ellie bumped her head against the mirror. There was no one waiting for her.

She noticed the handcuffs on the dresser. Immediately, she put them in her handbag as if no one would be using these but her. Just in case.

What had happened? She felt a little lost and slightly empty as she licked her dry lips. She went through her bag then hoping for something sweet. Something to savor, but she'd already eaten the melted candy. Evidently.

"Why are you up so early," Evan squinted to the light.

"I just couldn't sleep." She wasn't sure if she should get back in bed with Evan. Things had changed. Hadn't they? "I want to go to the hospital." She'd decided maybe she could figure this out there. Not that she wanted anyone to figure out she was crazy. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe. She just knew she had to go there. It was better than waiting around here.

"The hospital? You look perfectly fine to me." He got up then. He atleast had his flannel pants on. She didn't have any underwear. Still. And there was none to be found in the motel room, either. Damn. She bit her bottom lip. What was it with the underwear?

"What do you remember? These last few days?" Ellie crossed her arms and stared at him.

"That we left home." He shrugged looking at her as if he was one lost puppy, and she was suppose to be taking care of him instead of just standing there doing nothing.

"That's all there is to it?" She wished he wouldn't lie.

"Yeah." Evan touched her shoulders then, but she flinched away. She didn't want him touching her.

"Somebody trying to hurt me, Evan?" Ellie asked.

"No, of course not." Evan winced as if how could she think such a thing.

"Are they after you?"

"You don't know anything, " He smiled. "Stop trying to make shit up." He grabbed her, shaking her a little.

Ellie pulled away before he hugged her.

"I'm going to the hospital. I don't care if you come with me or not." She went outside then.

"Don't be mad!" He chased after her. "You are all right, aren't you?"

Of course, his black sports car was locked and not a scratch on it.

"I dunno." She felt lost as she looked around. "Can we go home after I go to the hospital?"

"But we're going to California."

"I don't want to go to California," Ellie said. She thought of the silly trailer house that the old lady had promised her in her dream. It wasn't even where she lived, but where she used to live. That would be her home now, if she ever got out of here.

"But we'd decided," Evan said unlocking the door as they got in.

"You decided."

He started the car then. Ellie had no idea where the nearest hospital was.
