"Now don't go getting your hopes up that he's around here somewhere," Kale told her.

"I don't want to see him," Ellie winced. "I want to know if it'll run. The keys are still in it, you know."

"OK."

"Well, don't you drive?"

"I don't drive. Its not a good thing to drive around here. You don't know where you're going. So why drive." He stared at her a little hard, but she wasn't giving up on this idea that they needed a car, or maybe she needed the car.

"Get in." She got in the driver's side. She'd always wanted to drive Evan's car, but he never let her. That was his baby.

There was a little damage on the outside front bumper. Hopefully, the engine wasn't messed up.

"Maybe he was trying to do himself in," Kale reminded her.

"Highly, unlikely."

She tried to start the car, but it would barely make noise.

"Come on, please, Blackie, do something," Ellie bagged.

"He named his car?" Kale chuckled.

"No, I did," Ellie said staring back a Kale. "I always took care of this car. I changed the oil. I washed it. We were friends."

"Yeah, evidently." Kale rolled his eyes at that.

She tried again.

"Damn." She hit the stirring wheel with her hand out of spite. Finally, she got out and looked under the hood. Then she looked under the front seat for a wrench, and went back to work.

"Try it," Ellie yelled.

"All right."

"Don't flood it."

Carefully, he turned the key and it started.

"Yes!" Finally something was going her way, even if this was a place where everything was just a little off.

She got back in and turned the vehicle toward the road ready to race.

"There's no need to hurry," Kale said nervously as he hung on to the seat.

"Where were we going?"

"Back the other direction, actually." Kale watched the road as she made a quick donut and went in the opposite direction.

"This is so fun!" She sighed as she felt the force of the speed under her her.
