the other side

"What is this?" Ellie winced as she looked back at the mirror. She was fighting with the handcuffs, but obviously, the girl in the reflection was still out cold.

"You know, nobody ever sees me," he informed her. "You must have known this was bound to happen."

"I didn't!" She wasn't sure why she was explaining herself. "What is this place?"

"The other side." His voice was calm. It was as if he'd accepted his fate and she soon would too.

"He drugged me, didn't he?" She wanted to know. There had to be an explanation. Had to be.

"It looks that way, but I didn't know when he actually did it, must have been in the drink." He was looking around the room to see if there was a key to the handcuffs. At least, she hoped.

"See, I'm still on drugs. Its just a dream. Its a dream, isn't it?" She struggled more with the handcuffs that were wrapped around the headboard. Her arms were above her head.

"Its starts out that way," he said. "I guess."

"You guess?"

"There isn't exactly a book of some kind to explain it to you, you know, like the book of Mormon over there." He pointed to the bible by the night stand. He kept searching.

"Who are you? How did you get here?" She wondered if she was breathing on the other side of the mirror? Ellie couldn't tell.

"Kale, thats my name." he was digging through the dresser drawer. He tossed out condoms, but nothing like a key. "Once I stayed in that very room." He pointed into the mirror. "Its like a portal, perhaps. I guess. I don't know. I was just trying to do myself in and the next thing I know, I'm here." He dug through the night stand then. There were pills there, but no key.

"Sorry, we might have to do this the old fashioned way," Kale said.

"Old fashioned way?" Ellie squinted.

"I think your boyfriend kept the key. And I'm pretty sure he's not coming back." Kale started pulling at the headboard then. Ellie felt her wrist give in to the metal. Perhaps she was bleeding. She hoped he could break it.
