She supposed he might have gone out to get breakfast. She hoped. She was starving. Eggs and hash browns. Just the thought made her stomach growl. She fumbled toward the floor to pull her dress back on. At least something. Normally she wasn't this naked in the morning when she got up. Then she automatically went to use the bathroom and brush her teeth. She stared at her teeth for a moment in the bathroom mirror. Out of the corner of her eye she thought she saw something move. A chill instantly came over her, she turned around to look out at the main room. Quickly she turned on the lamp and looked around. Perhaps it was a dog or a cat that got in. Even worse, what if it were a mouse. That made her clinch her teeth tight as she tiptoed around. She didn't see a thing. Everything looked normal. Nothing out of the ordinary. Ellie went back to rinse her teeth. Again, she looked up at the bathroom mirror. She was sure she saw something then. In the mirror. She squinted hard to make it out. Was that a foot by the bed near the TV? Ellie turned back. There was no foot. She looked all around the bed for a body, even a foot. Nada. She smiled. Maybe her eyes were playing tricks on her. Maybe she was just too tired to know what was going on. Ellie sighed and sat back on the bed, turned on the TV. She needed cable. Otherwise nothing was normal. Ellie plopped herself in the middle of the bed and clicked through the channels. Yes, there had been a tornado. They drove through a tornado. "God, he's such an idiot," she said aloud. "Why did I get stuck with him?" She closed her eyes and thought about this. God, he was so damn adorable. She knew the first time she laid eyes on him that she wanted a little boy just like him. But he hated kids. Evan made it sound like the worst thing in the world was to populate the planet. But then he didn't want her to be on the pill, either. "That's just too easy," he told her after they'd been together the first time, making her feel like a slut if she wanted to take care of herself. "You might end up with cervical cancer, or something. You can still get STDs." They'd argued about this so much she was certain she never wanted to have sex with him again, but somehow that wasn't in the cards. He was the only one she wanted to be with, but he never quite believed her. She felt sad thinking about it. He couldn't be her soul-mate. He just couldn't be. Ellie looked up in the mirror of the dresser and was certain someone was there, but in the edge of the mirror. She couldn't quite see him. There was someone, but it was a little blurry. He wasn't looking at her. Maybe if she got his attention, he'd see her. She waved. Nothing. She was being ignored, completely. This was beginning to be a bad dream. Maybe if she pinched herself she'd wake up.
