a happy place

Kate waited on the couch. She felt safe there. Evidently. Before she knew it, she was asleep. Home. In her own bed. Thinking she needed to get a job soon. She couldn't live off her mother forever. True, they did think she was a goof. Couldn't decide on a major. Couldn't decide much on anything. Really, she was set in her ways. Why did she ever come here with Ellie? Maybe she was older, but it didn't mean she was wiser. She had a lousey track record with relationships. They always soured in the end. She could never give enough, evidently. And she felt like a failure in the sister department, as well.

But then it happened. Some one was shaking her from her slumber. When she opened her eyes, she screamed and scrambled over the couch to get away from the would be intruder.

"Evan!" Her throat was scratchy now. Thanks to him. "What is wrong with you!" She stared at him blankly. They hadn't heard from him in months. He looked the same. As if she'd seen him yesterday. As perhaps he'd always been there.

"Where's Ellie?" He remained expressionless as if he might be a zombie now.

"I dunno." She didn't. "I thought maybe you'd know."

"He's got her then." He sighed looking around.

"I came with her and before I knew it, she wasn't here." Kate looked around too to see if perhaps there was a mystery door she'd missed. "What do you mean?"

"This is Ellie's happy place." He told her.

"Happy place?"

"She kept saying we had to come here. This was her destination. Evidently." Evan shrugged and sat down on the couch then as if there was nothing else to do.

"What does that mean?" Kate winced, deciding it was pointless to stand.

"It means, he's got to her and locked her a way."

"Well, is she OK?" Kate felt sick to her stomach as if Ellie might be in a coffin somewhere six feet under, waiting to die.

"I'm sure she's just fine. Kale's way of protecting her. He's with her. So thats probably all that matters." Evan gritted.

"Well, where are they?" Kate squinted.

"Same place. Different world."

"What?"

"Just a different diminsion."

"Like an illusion?"

"No, different world. One we can't get too. Kale's world, evidently."

"His world? What do you mean?" Kate sat up and stared back at Evan that he better explain this.

"Mind over matter. Sort of." Evan sounded vague. "I don't know how it works but evidently, he figured Sal out or something. I dunno. Its like looking into a mirror and escaping into that reflection. But you really have to want it, you have to be there in your mind. Its hard to explain. He put himself in a coma last time. I guess. I dunno how he did it, but he did and now he's gone again."

"I don't get it," Kate shook her head.

"I don't know, either. But now you see him and then you don't."

"But she's gonna have a baby!" Kate croaked. "What about that?"

"Yeah, about that." Evan pursed his lips slightly. "Look if you feel a cold spot, that's where they are. You know, what they say about ghosts."

"Are you saying they're dead?"

"I'm saying, they aren't here. That's what I'm saying, but they are here. You just can't see them." He explained.

A chill went through Kate just then. Maybe it was Ellie. Maybe it was just her imagination.
