07.24.08 Joel, a tall blond guy was focused more on the show than Kale. "You know, you never get the news here," Kale told Ellie. "Is that really a bad thing?" "It would be nice to know whats going on," Joel said. "And there aren't any kids around here, either," Ellie noticed. "Oh, I know, I've seen at least one, somewhere," Joel squinted in thought. "Was it at the movie theater?" "Never seen one there." Kale shook his head, no. "Maybe it was at the Dollar General, I think they have kids clothes there. Toys too." Joel nodded. "Maybe." "You guys don't seem to know much," Ellie said opening the fridge to see just an old orange, alone. "Do you buy groceries?" Kale looked at Joel who stared back at him. "He forgets." They said at the same time. Ellie closed her eyes, trying to wish she were home in her own kitchen where she could reach in the fridge and take out some yummy jello or even a tomato to eat. "We're slowly going to starve, aren't we," Ellie said. Then they would float on somewhere else. "We're not going to starve." Kale got up and closed the fridge door. "You're letting out the cold." "Sorry." "What do you want me to do?" He looked cross and perhaps a tad evil to Ellie. Maybe this is how it started. She just asked too many questions, and the next thing she'd know- No. She had to stop thinking that way. She didn't think Kale was the type. He just looked confused. Tired. This was a place you just came to be grumpy the rest of this life because this was all it had to offer. "I don't think you're going to go out and kill us a rabbit, are you?" She looked at him with a somber face. "Have you seen a rabbit?" He stared at her intently that she might be hiding this bit of information from him. "No." "I haven't seen one." He seemed a bit sad about it. "I should have brought home leftovers," Ellie then said. "You could have brought home leftovers?" "I guess. Maybe." "I wouldn't want you to get into trouble." Kale shrugged then taking a look in the empty cupboard. "What would happen if I got in trouble?" "I don't know." He kept looking for cans of food, but there weren't any. "Maybe I should take something so we could find out," she offered. "No." He turned to her then. "You can't do that. I wouldn't want you in trouble. We'll think of something. Maybe we could just go back to the truck-stop or we could go to the Dollar General. We'll get more food. We can buy some food." He checked with Joel then to find out how much he had on him. They had at least twenty bucks between them. "This time, when we go to the Dollar General, we'll think ahead. Ahead for the whole week," Kale then said.
